º·¤ÇÒÁà¡ÕèÂǡѺ So Ji-Sub áÅÐ What happened in BaliAs time goes by, actors become more and more sly. They don't have only a great presence while acting, but learn to grasp the art of replying to interview questions well. However, after meeting someone who knows exactly how to portray him or herself as a certain type of person, there is no lingering effect of my thinking of them afterwards. That's why I sometimes, as an interviewer, longed for a newbie who's awkward in speech. I longed for that genuineness.
"I'm a Scorpio, blood type O. But the people who know me tell me that I seem like a blood type OB. They mean that my personality can't be soundly categorized in one blow. It's stubborn that way." I met So Ji Sub twice, but he always replies without elaboration. He says he doesn't like leaving vestiges of himself behind, so he doesn't allow me to use a tape recorder. But even so, he doesn't give me the impression of being the type of person who objects to everything. His replies are always shorter than the questions themselves, but although he has few words, his real feelings always manage to get through.
This is a childish analogy, but there are times when you go out on a blind date without really looking forward to it, and end up picking up a good man; times when you watch a drama lightly, without expecting much, and experience it like a ripple caused by a rock thrown in a still lake. The wave caused by <What Happened in Bali> is still spreading out in a circle. There's been a feeling of emptiness in T.V. viewers since the drama <A Perfect Love> ended, and no other drama has since clung to their emotions. <Bali...> has now done this, but it was recognized as a mere little piece of composition at first. Maybe it was because of the image the title gave off, but despite that the young stars So Ji Sub, Jo In Sung, and Ha Ji Won were shooting it, to be honest, I thought that they'd joined what seemed to be a short miniseries with the relationship of being drinking partners.
But it completely soared above my expectations. The two men of Bali (Jung Jae Min, Kang In Wook) and the two women (Choi Yung Joo, Lee Soo Jung) met by chance, and got tied up by merely one string of the very complicated pattern of destiny. Who could have known that our bodies would become so drenched by their small, falling raindrops? The drama <Bali...> had a different kind of charm from <Damo>, which nurtured pye-in* on a large scale, or the people's drama that rose out of obscurity, <Dae Jang Geum>, or <Stairway to Heaven>, which received a lot of criticism, but which we simply had to watch. Writer Kim Ki Ho and PD Choi Moon Suk set out to introduce the four main characters and to show us that man's contorted desire is hidden within each of us.
However, in <Bali...>, the character who was shown to be the most normal was Kang In Wook. His appearance in suits was one of a man who never sagged his shoulders and always looked straight ahead. But his manly shoulders, which can be found everywhere (in dramas), clashed with the sad eyelight he possessed (this is a different story from the rising trend of metrosexuality). Rather than simply looking at an inanimate object, Kang In Wook seems to look far past the present state of affairs, and into the faint line of vision. Although he had the kind of eyelight that resembles that of a sad beast's, there was a kind of dignity to it as well, similar to that of a male lion competing for the throne. The reason all of Korea's women have fallen so deeply for a guy like Kang In Wook is because of his distinctive charm. He is an imposing victor of a man, and hardly seems to have such a deficiency in strength that he can't order this desire to be justified. Although you're strong, and despite knowing that you shouldn't do it, you want to embrace him. I met So Ji Sub, who had run a marathon for three months and still had not fallen out of Kang In Wook. So Ji Sub and Kang In Wook. These two people were so similar, they were like Siamese Twins.
I've been curious about this. What was Kang In Wook looking at with those sad eyes? It was the kind of eyelight that suggested he was looking at something far away. Was that your creation? No. I didn't have many lines, but I had to present my mental state through my expressions, so honestly, acting was hard. From an actor's point of view, having a lot of lines is more comfortable. I didn't know how to manage my line of vision, so I just looked straight ahead. Was that strange?
It wasn't so much strange as unique. The popularity of <What Happened in Bali> was considerable, side by side with So Ji Sub's skyrocketing popularity and body worth. Do you, as the person in question, sense that this flourishing is due to <Bali...>? As I shot <Bali...>, as an actor, I think I learned for the first time that acting is a little fun. Because I was filming until just the day before yesterday, I can't sense that the flourishing is due to <Bali...>. Still, I now feel more of a burden towards my next work.
Do you like Kang In Wook? Yeah, I think he's a somewhat charming character. He's not bad. I like him.
I heard that So Ji Sub really resembles Kang In Wook. How so? I'm not as stuffy as him, but we're similar in that we only say what needs to be said. And I don't use difficult words (for example, like Grahms**) like he does sometimes.
Did you ever want to be Jung Jae Min? Never. Besides his having more money than Kang In Wook, I never wanted to be like him. Truthfully, the circumstances of the characters shown in this drama don't represent a large part of the population, because they're all people who possess crooked desires.
Did you not understand Kang In Wook's desire? I can understand him, but I wouldn't have behaved the way he did. And I didn't like the way he behaved towards his mother. I didn't like the way he was rude to his mother.
Did you understand why he loved a woman like Lee Soo Jung, who was constantly going back and forth? The way Lee Soo Jung didn't even deny that women don't give away their feelings to just any man was disgusting. I can't understand. If I were Lee Soo Jung, I wouldn't have put myself in that kind of situation. The truth is, In Wook knew from the beginning that Soo Jung didn't love him. That's why he never once told Soo Jung he loved her. Jae Min lost everything and gained love, while In Wook gained wealth and lost Soo Jung's love.
Is it hard for you to tell a loved one you love them? I'm not as bad as Kang In Wook. I would express it appropriately. I think if I had a girlfriend, I'd be good to her.
What made <Bali...>'s love triangle/square relationships so fun to watch wasn't because of simple affection, but because the characters were seeking the truth of "desire". Can I use a complicated term? The philosopher Jee Ra Reun*** addressed desire by saying "The object of desire is not desire itself, but the imitation that comes with the revelation of another person's desire." That's why at first, Jung Jae Min met Choi Yung Joo - because he wanted to have everything Kang In Wook had. That's also why he began to want to have Lee Soo Jung. Has So Ji Sub ever known someone he wanted to imitate?****
Have you ever thought about which man you would choose if you were Lee Soo Jung? I don't know...I've never thought about it. But a while ago, a middle-aged lady told me that Jung Jae Min is a man you would want to have for a boyfriend, but Kang In Wook is a man you would want to become your husband, even if you had to divorce your husband to do it. I think I would be like that, too.
There was a line in <Bali...> that was constantly repeated. Lee Soo Jung said it to Jung Jae Min, Jung Jae Min said it to Lee Soo Jung, and at the very end, Kang In Wook said it to Lee Soo Jung. "They say that if you keep meeting someone by accident, it's destiny. So are we destined, too?" Do you believe in destiny? I like the phrase "There is no such thing as destiny". There might be a set course for us in life, but I don't want to think of it as destiny.
Do you think that if you sincerely wish for something, it'll be achieved? I think all possibilities have a fifty-fifty chance. Thinking that way is comfortable for me. If I think that something won't happen, then I give up quickly. My favourite number is 51. 49 and 51 are very different. Even if it barely crosses the halfway point, it means the possibility is just a touch closer to coming true.
Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won, with <Bali...>, are receiving a lot of praise for their intimate acting, but do you have any comments to make on their acting? I don't have the capacity to praise without hesitation, but they both have quick instincts. In Sung really gets absorbed in emotion; he's good at being absorbed. It's like he really thinks he's Jung Jae Min. He's really good at crying. As for me, I'm the kind of person who needs time to become absorbed. I need to prepare my feelings slowly.
*pye-in: It's hard to explain, but it's sort of like "obsession". Koreans describe alcoholics or drug addicts as being "pye-in" to alcohol or drugs; in this instance, the article is referring to the Damo Pye-in that occurred, where viewers were completely obsessed and talked of and thought of nothing but it. This also happened with "I'm Sorry, I Love You", and thus, is called "MiSa Pye-in". **Grahms: A philosopher that In Wook talked about with Soo Jung in WHIB. I'm not sure if this is the way to spell his name, since it was written in Korean. Does anyone know the proper spelling, and who he is? ***Jee Ra Reun: Again, a philosopher. I'm not sure who he is, and I don't know how to spell his name. Help? ****There was no reply from So Ji Sub to this question available from the link that Prisci gave me, so I just left it as it is. Shame, isn't it?

" Were we a fate too ? " - Cosmo Girl 2004/April
" I can feel you left your heart there. Go, if you want to. I'll be here alway... " Just like Kang Inwook, So Ji Sub seems to stay his seat always. Quiet but strong guy, let's meet So Ji Sub.
As time goes, actors become a fox(?). They become acustomed to not only acting but also interview. But interview, with who can measure how he will be shown, has no trailing. Trailing is that make me think about him once more after meeting. " I am in Scorpio, blood type is O. People say I look like AB type. That means I'm not that harmonious person. " I met SJS twice, he always answers in few words. He doesn't want me to use voice recorder, because he doesn't want to leave any trace. I don't feel it is any complication. His answers are shorter than my questions, but I can tell they are from his heart.
First, I watched his drama 'Happening in Bali' with light mind, but finally I fell into it seriously. Inwook was comparetively normal person than others. He wears formal suits, never let his shoulder down, always look at forward straight, but has sad eyes. He is looking at front of things with his dim eyelights. His eyes are similar to sad animals' but also has tough dignity of lion king. That's what make all women fell into Kang Inwook, different two types of attractiveness. I met So Ji Sub, just finished 3 months marathone, still can't escape from Kang Inwook. So Ji Sub and Kang In Wook, they look alike just like Siamese twins.
Q> I was curious, what was Kang Inwook looking at ? with such sad eyes ? Eyelights that looking far ahead. was that your acting creation ?
A> No, I have few dialogs, I had to show my feeling only with my face. I felt very difficult to act. It's easier to act that has many dialogs. I didn't know how to act with my eyes. I just looked at forward. Was that strange ?
Q> No, not strange, it was unique. The popularity of 'Happening in Bali' was great, also your popularity and your body price(?). Can you feel the change after 'Bali' ?
A> During this work, I could think that acting is such interesting job even a little bit. I just finished Bali~ few days ago, I can't feel any change yet. But I feel a hard burden of next work.
Q> Do you like Kang Inwook ?
A> Ummm, somewhat attractive character, not bad. I like it.
Q> SJS and Kang Inwook are similar. How do you think ?
A> I'm not that stuffy. But I don't say unnecessary words. that's similar to me. But I never say difficult words like him (such as Gramsci)
Q> Haven't you want to become Jung Jaemin (Jo In Sung character) ?
A> Never. He has nothing that I want to take after. He has more money only than Kang Inwook. In fact, almost characters are not normal. All have twisted desire.
Q> Couldn't you understand Kang Inwook's desire ?
A> I understand, but if I were him, I should not do in that way. I don't like him how to treat his mother. I don't like him impolite to mother.
Q> Can you understand Inwook loves Soojung? Most women hated Soojung, who never give heart to anyone, never deny anyone.
A> I can't understand. If I were Soojung, I would not make such situation. In fact, Inwook knew that Soojung doesn't love him, from the first. So he never say 'I love you' to Soojung. Jaemin lost all and got love, while Inwook got wealth then lost love.
Q> Do you spare "I love you" to your lover ?
A> Not as much as Inwook. I express my love properly. If I have a girlfriend, I would treat her well.
Q> What made <Bali...>'s love triangle/square relationships so fun to watch wasn't because of love affair, but because the characters were seeking the truth of "desire". Can I use a complicated term? The philosopher Rene Girard addressed desire by saying "The desire is not what the subject of desire itself do desire something, but imitatates another person's desire." That's why at first, Jung Jae Min met Choi Young Joo - because he wanted to have everything Kang In Wook had. That's also why he began to want to have Lee Soo Jung. Have you So Ji Sub ever have someone you want to imitate?
A> Mickey Rourke. I fell for him as I watched '9 1/2 Weeks'(1986). He smiled to Kim Basinger as he entered the door. He looked very attractive to me. It was not only sexy, how to say... mysterious man's attractiveness. So I collected his movies. One more my favorate actor is Edward Norton. His face shows both good and bad. I like him more because he suits for bad role as well. I enjoyed 'Primal fear' but I prefer "American history X'
Q> If you were Soojung, which guy would you choose ?
A> Well... I never thought that. An older woman said to me that, Jaemin is for a lover, while Inwook is for my own man even though I must divorce to get him.
Q> A sentence is repeated in Bali drama, "If coincidences are repeated, it's a fate, then are we a fate? " Do you believe in fate ?
A> My favorate sentence is "There's no fate". Well my future may be determined a little bit, but I don't want to say it's a fate.
Q> Doesn't love come like a fate ?
A> I don't believe 'Love at first sight'. I never fall in love at first sight. I recognize how I like her long time after spending time together. My sense system is slow.
Q> Do you believe that something is accomplished if you wish it eagerly ?
A> The possibility is 50% always. It makes me feel comfortable. I give up quickly if I realize something is impossible.
Q> Acting of Jo In Sung & Ha Ji Won are also estimated very good in this drama. How do you estimate their acting ?
A> How can I estimate? I just can say that both have very good reaction speed. JIS focus on his character well in short moment. It seems that he thinks himself is real Jaemin. Specially he is good at tearing. I need to take time to fall in my character. I have to prepare slowly from my heart.
Q> One week have passed since you finished shooting. How is your feeling ? What's your next plan ?
A> I'm still confusing. I feel like I just finished 300Km running for 3 months. I have no fixed schedule yet. I used to take a rest for 5~6 months after each work. But this time, I can't take such a long rest. I hope I take totally different character in next work. By...Saturn from...http://nbbs.naver.com/nmulti/read.php?board_id=sannycho_0&nid=760
